The Malaga Metro, constructed by FCC, opens its doors

The Malaga Metro, constructed by FCC, opened its doors on the 30th of July. This act was presided over by the Andalusian Government President, Susana Díaz, accompanied by the Minister for Development Ana Pastor, the Mayor of Malaga, Francisco de la Torre, the President of FCC Construcción, Fernando Moreno and the General Manager of FCC Construcción, Miguel Jurado.

The official opening covered Malaga Metro Lines 1 and 2, from Teatinos and Palacio de los Deportes to the El Perchel-María Zambrano interchange station, a route of 17 kilometres and 12 stations, which required an investment of 599.64 million Euros.

The route that was put into operation forms 81% of the total Malaga Metro network, which also covers the sections of Renfe-Guadalmedina, currently under construction, Guadalmedina-Atarazanas, under tender, and Guadalmedina-Hospital Civil, in public debate.

The official Metro opening took place after a modification of the sections, which had not been executed, permitting long-term feasibility to the entire network, cutting execution times and reducing works and maintenance costs.

The Malaga Metro is a contract for the construction, supply of rolling stock and operation of Metro Lines 1 and 2 for 35 years. FCC has lead the construction project since 2004 for this new transport infrastructure in the city, which will cover the demand of some 15.5 million passengers up to the end of 2015. When the entire network is completed, planned for 2017, the Malaga Metro will be 14.8 kilometres long, have 23 stations and provide for 20.7 million passengers per year.
