FCC Industrial completes its involvement in the construction of the La Gran Manzana Shopping Centre (Tenerife)

FCC Industrial has completed its involvement in the construction of the La Gran Manzana Shopping Centre (Tenerife), which is one of the most significant commercial and technological development projects recently carried out in the Canary Islands. The development of this infrastructure has been a major driver of economic growth for the southern region of Tenerife, contributing to the creation of direct and indirect jobs, the strengthening of the local business community and the diversification of services available to residents and tourists. Its opening has also helped to establish a new model of shopping centre tailored to current needs in terms of sustainability, digitalisation and operational efficiency.

FCC Industrial has implemented advanced technological solutions aimed at minimising the environmental impact of its operations and maximising efficiency in the use of available resources. The complex has been designed with the aim of significantly reducing its reliance on conventional energy sources, prioritising renewable energy generation, energy storage and smart consumption management. This approach enables progress towards an operating model close to energy self-sufficiency, increasing the facility’s operational resilience and reducing its exposure to fluctuations in the energy market.

The sustainability strategy adopted for the project is based on three main pillars: renewable energy generation; high-capacity energy storage; and comprehensive optimisation of energy and water resources.

One of the most significant elements of the infrastructure is the photovoltaic plant integrated into the complex, with a nominal installed capacity of 1,100 kW.
This installation enables the high levels of solar radiation characteristic of southern Tenerife to be converted into clean, emission-free electricity, covering a significant proportion of the shopping centre’s daily energy demand. The photovoltaic output is primarily used for the site’s own consumption, powering the lighting, air conditioning, retail fittings, electric mobility and auxiliary systems, whilst also supplying energy for charging and storing the batteries. The photovoltaic plant has been architecturally integrated to optimise the use of available space, thereby also helping to reduce the carbon footprint associated with the complex’s operations.

To complement renewable generation, the centre features an energy storage system based on state-of-the-art batteries, with a discharge power of 3 MW and a total storage capacity of 5.4 MWh. This infrastructure enables surplus energy generated during periods of peak solar production to be stored for later use at times of high demand or during periods of lower renewable generation.

The combination of photovoltaic generation and energy storage transforms the complex into a genuine smart microgrid capable of efficiently managing energy production, consumption and storage.

Another of the project’s most innovative aspects is the incorporation of an energy vectoring system to produce drinking water from ambient humidity. The joint integration of the energy and water systems places La Gran Manzana amongst the most innovative commercial developments in Europe.

The availability of 50 charging points for electric vehicles constitutes another of the fundamental pillars of the sustainability model implemented.

The operation of the energy infrastructure is supported by advanced monitoring and control systems that enable real-time supervision of production, storage and consumption parameters.

The complex represents a new generation of commercial infrastructure capable of addressing current energy and environmental challenges through the application of innovative technologies, actively contributing to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, the improvement of energy efficiency and progress towards a more sustainable and resilient development model.
